Tsvangirai Holds Meeting With Unsettled NGO Leaders

Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai on Wednesday held a meeting with representatives of non-governmental organizations and later suggested that national elections could be called as early as July.

Speaking after the meeting, Mr. Tsvangirai said he expected parliamentary and presidential polls to be held soon after the constitutional referendum.

The prime minister had been invited to the meeting by the Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition to discuss the on-going crackdown on civil groups and related issues.

Reports at the weekend indicated that President Robert Mugabe wanted elections to be held June 29 to end the shaky government of national unity whose mandate runs out in the same month.

Tsvangirai spokesman Luke Tamborinyoka said the prime minister assured the NGOs that they will be allowed to do their work without any hindrance.
