Rebecca Mafikeni, one of the 29 MDC-T activists arrested two years ago over the death of a policeman in Glen View suburb passed away in detention Monday after her condition deteriorated.
Mafikeni was one of the five activists who remained in jail charged with the alleged murder of Police Inspector Petros Mutedza. She remained in remand at Chikurubi Prison with four other activists who were recently denied bail.
Initially a group dubbed the Glenview 29 was arrested in connection with Mutedza’s death. The majority were released on bail leaving Mafikeni and her four colleagues behind bars.
The MDC-T said she had been hospitalized for the past two weeks and died Monday morning at Parirenyatwa Hospital.
The courts refused the MDC an opportunity to transfer her to a private hospital when he condition worsened.
MDC-T youth assembly president Solomon Madzore says Mafikeni’s death was unfortunate.
