Zimbabwe's Former Finance Minister Makoni in U.S. to Court Supporters

Zimbabwe's former finance minister and leader of Mavambo/Kusile/Dawn party, Simba Makoni, is in the U.S. on a mission that will take him to a number of states, including Washington DC, where he will meet with fellow countrymen and women to discuss the political crisis back home and related issues.

Makoni told VOA Monday one of the issues he will discuss with Zimbabweans in the United States is the never-ending constitutional reform process.

The opposition leader says he’s concerned by the three governing parties' failure to produce a new constitution that will lead to free and fair elections.

Makoni said Zimbabwe needs a new charter, he does not believe that it is of necessity that the nations has a new constitution ahead of fresh polls.

He also took a swipe at army chiefs who are involving themselves in politics, adding the country's Lancaster House constitution does not allow that.

Makoni said he will also use his time in the U.S. to consult on how best Zimbabweans abroad think the country’s good old days can be restored.
