Zimbabwe's Strapped Prison System to Release 1,500 as Cost-Saving Measure

Zimbabwe's prison authority was set to release 1, 500 prisoners following this weeks announcement of a mass amnesty by President Robert Mugabe.

Officials said the amnesty was being extended because Zimbabwe Prison Services has been unable to provide adequate food, bedding, clothing and other essentials to prisoners.

On Thursday no date of release had been announced. But officials said 89 women are among those to be amnestied, along with inmates under the age of 18 who have served up to three years of their jail terms and prisoners who are terminally ill.

Assistant Program Manager Gabriel Ziyambi of the Association For Crime Prevention And Rehabilitation Of The Offender told reporter Marvellous Mhlanga-Nyahuye of VOA's Studio 7 for Zimbabwe that his his organization was not consulted on the amnesty program.
