Zimbabwe Church Leaders Prepare National Healing Process

While Zimbabwe's political opposition is demanding accountability for the perpetrators of political violence in months past, church leaders are working with non-governmental groups in an effort to heal divisions and wounds from the traumatic post-election period.

The Christian Alliance said a foundation is required for transitional justice to take place if and when the proposed national unity government is formed.

Christian Alliance National Coordinator Useni Sibanda told reporter Jonga Kandemiiri of VOA's Studio 7 for Zimbabwe that the effort will focus not only on counseling victims but on reaching out to those accused of committing political violence.

Amnesty International has estimated that some 180 people died in the wave of political violence that swept the country following March elections.
