Mob Justice Leaves 400 Zimbabweans Homeless In Mooiplaas, S. Africa

Zimbabweans living in the informal settlement of Mooiplaas, outside Pretoria, South Africa, Wednesday blamed a criminal gang from Maranda in Zimbabwe's Masvingo Province for sparking clashes on the weekend and early this week that left more than 20 shacks in ashes and drove families out of 50 more, leaving 400 homeless.

Witnesses said the violence in Mooiplaas between suspected Zimbabwean criminals and a mob of members of the South African Venda tribe was set off by the robbery and burning of a small food shop, bringing reprisals on the alleged perpetrators.

Correspondent Benedict Nhlapho of VOA's Studio 7 for Zimbabwe reported.
