Zimbabwe Labor Confederation Proposes To Narrow Pay Disparities

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions is putting the finishing touches on a policy document that recommends income distribution standards to be used in negotiations on salaries and wages for workers, sources in the confederation said.

The ZCTU said such an income distribution protocol would help in drawing up a social contract between business, labor and government - but it said it would insist that all workers must be paid salaries over the poverty line and would work to narrow the disparities between the wages paid workers and the salaries of managers.

ZCTU President Lovemore Matombo told reporter Jonga Kandemiiri of VOA's Studio 7 for Zimbabwe that the union will do all it can to show its negotiating partners what the consequences of such disparities are for ordinary workers.
