Officials of Zimbabwe Union Confederation Acquitted in FX Charges

Harare magistrate Lilian Kudya ruled Thursday that the state had failed to prove its allegation that three officials of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions engaged in illegal foreign exchange dealings, and discharged the three defendants.

ZCTU Secretary General Wellington Chibebe and project officers Vimbai Mushongera and Elijah Mutemeri were accused of illegal transactions for US$22,000 in 2005.

Chibebe told reporter Jonga Kandemiiri of VOA's Studio 7 for Zimbabwe that the court ruling bolstered union morale ahead of a two-day stay-away that the organization has called for April 3 and 4 in protest of plunging living conditions for workers.
