Eastern Region Claims Zimbabwe Football Association's Unity Cup

The Zimbabwe Football Association's 2006 Unity Cup was claimed Friday by a select team from the Eastern Region, which bested the Central Region team 2-1 at a match played in Harare's Rufaro Stadium on the Unity Day national holiday.

The Central Region squad was favored to take the cup as it included many players from the Mwana Africa team which recently won the Commercial Bank Of Zimbabwe Cup and thereby secured a berth in the Africa Champions League in 2007.

Central Region coach Willard Mashinkila-Khumalo had predicted a win for his team but Eastern Region coach Joey Antipas was the one to return home a hero.

Reporter Marvellous Mhlanga-Nyahuye of VOA's Studio 7 for Zimbabwe sought more details on the ZIFA Unity Cup from Harare sports commentator Michael Kariati.
