South African Churchmen Denounce Zimbabwe Upheaval

A group of South African churchmen which visited Zimbabwe earlier this week has quickly concluded that Harare’s destruction of businesses and homes has created a humanitarian disaster.

The South African Council of Churches issued a report Tuesday saying the destruction of the informal economy that served Zimbabwe’s poorest was “unparalleled in modern-day Africa.”

The church council also warned that young people who are now witnessing the hopelessness of their parents could, in the future, become what it called “catalysts for conflict.”

Reporter Brenda Moyo of VOA’s Studio 7 for Zimbabwe spoke with SACC Deputy Secretary General Eddie Makue about the group’s findings and its intentions going forward.
